STATE OF WISCONSIN ALERT TO SMALL BUSINESSES: BE AWARE OF SCAMMERS POSING AS WE ENERGIES
Milwaukee, WI – The State of Wisconsin has issued an alert to state businesses: Scammers are calling small businesses and threatening them with disconnection of services unless an immediate payment is made.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) says business owners and staff should be aware that the scammers are able to manipulate caller ID displays to show the local utility company’s name or number. In addition, says DATCP, a utility company will never demand immediate payment over the phone.
DATCP gives the following instruction: If you get a call, don’t engage with the caller; hang up. Then contact your utility provider directly using information from your billing statement to 1) report the call, and 2) verify your account status is satisfactory.
